Sunday Sept 25th, 2022: Gallup to Santa Fe


We only had about 200 miles to travel from Gallup to Santa Fe, so we decided to make a stop in Albuquerque on the way. We visited the ABQ Biopark which was described as a Botanical Garden, Zoo and Aquarium all in one location. We spent 2-3 hours there walking through the park where the animals were housed in enclosures with appropriate vegetation. There were a lot of shade trees which made for a pleasant time.

By mid afternoon everyone had arrived safely in Santa Fe. For this "Oil Drip" (a miniature Oil Leak with a new "hub-and-spoke" model), the cast of characters were David and Debbie, Drew and Mary, Rick and Christine, Geo and Jade, Lloyd and Michael. After dinner we all met up to remember past Oil Leaks and those leakers who are no longer with us.

Thursday was moving day for the Oil Drippers. After 4 nights at the Inn of the Governors in Santa Fe, we were to move on to Espanola, about 30 minutes north. It was also to be the longest driving day of the tour, as we planned to take the "High Road" to Taos, visit the Rio Grande Gorge Bridge, and complete the Enchanted Circle drive before heading south to Espanola. Four of the six cars took the High Road to Taos, with a fifth joining us in Taos. The high road was a pleasant scenic drive, though certainly not as scary as we had been (mischievously?) led to believe. Tuesday 27th Sept, 2022: Visit to Bandelier National Monument

One of the features of the new "hub and spoke" model for this trip was the freedom it gives participants to do their own thing each day and then rejoin the group back at the central base at the end of the day. Today was a good example. I will report on the choice we made to visit the Bandelier National Monument. We were joined by Mary and Drew, Christine and Rick, and Michael.  Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of rugged but beautiful canyon and mesa country as well as evidence of a human presence here going back over 11,000 years.  Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities. Wednesday 28th Sept,2022: Visit to Alburquerque

Once again, everyone chose how to best spend the third day of the Oil Drip. Debbie and myself, accompanied by Lloyd and Michael decided to visit Albuquerque  - about 60 miles to the south of Santa Fe. We packed in a full day with visits to the Wildlife West Nature Park, Old Town Albuquerque, and Sandia Crest. We chose the backroad route to east Albuquerque known as the Turquoise Trail Scenic Byway which passes through a number of the old Turquoise mining towns including Madrid and Cerrillos. This turned out to be a very enjoyable drive on a generally well-paved road through a scenic landscape - a great contrast from the freeway we had used previously between Santa Fe and Albuquerque. We arrived at the Wildlife West Nature Park a little after 10am.
